Relax Without The Gym

There's always a time when we just need a bit of peace and quiet and staying at home in the warm can be the best place to get it.

There are lots of videos online that can help you tap into your inner Yogi. Or even if you want to recreate your weekly class in the comfort of your own living room, you can! If you're still finding your strength, there's no one around to see you wobble.

Equally, if you're looking to do something where you can truly switch off and relax, why not find a quiet spot outside? The park, lake and countryside are all great for instantly improving your metal wellbeing. And getting some head space is just as important as looking after your physical wellbeing.

What you'll need:

 The exercises:

Cork Mat:

  • Our cork mats are non-slip and the natural material makes them wonderful and relaxing to stretch out and meditate on.
  • Stretch out your back, legs, core, chest and hip flexors with you concentrate on breathing and relaxing.
  • Fantastic for Yoga classes, as well as using at home or just any space that you find calming.

Yoga Blocks:

  • Yoga blocks are brilliant aids not only for doing Yoga with, but for just supporting you while you stretch, cushioning your spine as you sit and allowing your joints to relax.
  • Sit on them while you meditate cross-legged.
  • Use them to support your head while you stretch out and relax
  • Place them under your spine to help you extend your chest muscles so you can inhale deeply
  • Stand on them to allow your opposite leg to love freely as you stretch and strengthen your hips and legs.

Yoga Wheel:

  • If you already use a Yoga Wheel in your usual class routine, you'll be familiar with the range of exercises that can be done using one. If you're new to them however, why not take this opportunity to increase the flexibility of your spine? When you're new to Yoga, getting into some of those positions such as the cobra or a full pigeon pose can be really tricky. That's where the wheel comes in. Specially designed to follow the natural curvature of your back, this simple piece of kit supports you while you relax into a curved position, allowing you to gently increase your flexibility over time.

The workout:

  • There are lots of Yoga routines online that you can follow and many of them have specific goals. Just remember the people doing them have often being doing Yoga for a long time, so build up your strength and flexibility slowly to make sure you don't hurt yourself.
  • Meditation is a big part of relaxing so take a few minutes out of each day to clear your mind and quieten any anxious thoughts.
  • Stretching is important for anyone looking to keep fit and stay healthy. Make sure your body is warm first so this is best done after a cardio workout. Then sit and hold your stretch positions for at least 30 seconds. Be careful not to strain your joints, bu time if you can. Stretching is also best done regularly so try and fit it in as much as you can to improve mobility.

Taking it to the next level:

  • Bikram Yoga (or "hot Yoga") has really taken off and nowadays, there are classes to be found all over the place! Take your Yoga routine to the next level and really get a sweat on with a few sessions of Bikram Yoga. It takes a little while to get used to but it's definitely worth it in the end.
